Common Signs a Rice Whitener Screen or Feed Screw Needs Replacement

The whitening section is responsible for transforming brown rice into white rice by removing the bran layer through abrasive or friction contact. Because this process involves intense abrasive friction, feed screws, screen jalis, and breaker bars wear continuously.

Operating worn whitener parts even a few days past their service life leads to uneven whitening, higher broken percentages (loss of head rice yield), increased motor current draw, and grain leakage into the bran cyclone.

The feed screw pushes brown rice into the whitening chamber under steady axial pressure. Watch for these 3 symptoms:

1. Intake Choking & Surging: The machine intake hopper backs up or feeds unevenly despite the inlet slide gate being fully open.

2. Rounded Flight Edges: When inspected, the leading flight edge of the screw is razor-thin or rounded, allowing grain to slip backward instead of pushing forward.

3. Motor Ampere Fluctuations: The ammeter needle bounces erratically due to cyclical chamber pressure buildup and release.

Whitener screens must hold the rice grains inside the chamber while letting fine bran dust pass through the perforations:

1. Grain in Bran Output: If you find whole rice kernels in your bran cyclone or bran conveyor, one of the screen segments has cracked or worn open.

2. Hot Chamber Temperature: When screen slots get blinded or burred, bran cannot escape. This increases chamber friction, causing the grain temperature to spike and crack the kernels.

3. Scratched Kernel Surfaces: Dull, unevenly worn screen edges scratch the rice grain rather than evenly polishing the bran.

Inspect feed screws and screen jalis every 500 operating hours. Always keep a spare set of matched feed screws, breaker bars, and screens in your mill inventory to prevent unplanned downtime during peak paddy harvesting seasons.
